Our under 15 girls play in the Central Warwickshire Girls Football League as Wordsley Panthers, following the successful fusion of Sedgley Panthers and Wordsley Wasps girls during summer 2020.
Home ground: Summerhill School, Kingswinford Manager: David Vickery/ John Doleman Assistant Manager: Alan Hannaway/Franco Orefice/John Cook
A real top quality game of football today, played out by two of the better footballing teams that this league have to offer. Wordsley started brightly and created some good chances and should really have taken the lead on a couple of occasions, but instead we were denied by the woodwork and some good goalkeeping. Then, against the run of play Derby banged in a scorcher from long range following a quick break. A little stunned, we regrouped and continued to press and cause Derby all kinds of problems. But to no avail, Half Time 1 - 0 to Derby. Derby started the second half strongly with Panthers on the back foot, but following a quick break, Athena chased a lost cause and pressed their GK into a mistake which spilled through to Lottie who slotted calmly away with aplomb; 1-1. Derby bounced back and scored another from a well taken long range free kick, before an equalizer for Panthers from a long range free kick of our own from Molly. Astonishing strike! More pressure for Derby got them back into the lead with a tap in from close range. With only 10 or so minutes to go, Panthers continued to go for it and created more great opportunities, but just couldn't put them away. With Panthers charging forward for a late equalizer and starting to tire, space opened up behind our midfield and Derby slotted away a couple more in the dying minutes to make it a formality. Not our day today - every game needs a winner and a loser; sometimes the best team doesn't win, but we are so proud of these girls who gave everything to make this game a real classic and came so close to proving alot of people wrong. Amazing effort Ladies 👍🏻
Good luck to both teams in the Final!
Alan said: Girls, there were a few tears today, but each and every one of you should feel nothing but immense pride on what you've achieved this year. You lost to Derby, a city, an academy team linked to a Championship team, with a huge catchment area. And then there's us, a mix of Wordsley and Sedgley, small districts of towns in the Black Country, and you couldn't tell the difference and guess which team showed more class in the way they kept coming back, and after the game.....WORDSLEY PANTHERS 👏👏👏👏👏💪💪💪💪💪💪 DV said: Great effort today girls . We gave it our best shot but it wasn’t meant to be . Great performances all round. The score flattered them. A big thank you to all the players for this season . It’s been a pleasure Being part of such a great side and more importantly a great bunch of girls. Well done to Jo for GOM. Solid in midfield. Thanks mills for playing out of position. Matchday 14 - 13/06/2021
Coventry City (a) 0 - 0
The most boring game of football I have ever witnessed (and that is saying something); I don't recall ever seeing a 0-0 draw in the 10 years I have been watching youth football. Nuff said...
Matchday 13 - 08/06/2021
Kidderminster Harriers (a) 3 - 4
Kiddy were certainly up for a game tonight and not afraid to put it about during the early stages; so much so they took a shock lead against the run of play with a nicely finished goal. Panthers continued to work hard and got a deserved equalizer through the rampant Athena, only to concede a long range free kick just minutes later with our goalie caught out by the low sun in her line of sight. We continued to terrorize the Kiddy defence and brought a string of excellent saves from their number 1. But the constant pressure finally paid off early in the second period with a great strike from Molly and then followed up with another direct from the corner. Panthers were on the ascendancy and could have scored more, including a terrific long range effort from our POTM Milli, which had the keeper well beaten and rattled the cross bar (it is still shaking). Isla added a well taken 4th goal, before a late consolation tested the Panthers parent's nerves, but in the end a well deserved victory that clinches us top spot in the Covid Cup Group A league stage. Bring on the semi.... Molly ⚽️⚽️ Athena ⚽️ Isla ⚽️ Kidderminster Harriers 3 - Wordsley Panthers 4
Alan said: Absolutely brilliant girls, scoreline would have been emphatic but for Bex. Fantastic game Milli, well earned GOTM and the nearly goal of the season award. DV said: Well done ladies. Deserved league winners - True Grit. Well done Mills solid as ever and even harder than that bar you keep hitting 👏👏 JD said: Champions 🥂⚽️⚽️⚽️🏆💜🖤 JC said: Brilliant Milli, solid performance with some moments of brilliance…. Can’t wait for one of those long range efforts to nestle in the back of the net 👏 really well played girls, really proud of you all 😊
Matchday 12 - 05/06/2021
Bartley Reds (h) 15 - 1
Alan said: Brilliant no nonsense, clinical performance, apart from conceding goal, which was my fault for shouting to Elley to play it out. Bigger games to come, but good performances everywhere, especially GOTM Rhiannon following her strong training session on Thursday 👏👏👏 DV said: Well played girls. And well done Rhiannon. Super consistent display 👏👏 JD said: Another great performance girls 😊👏⚽️🥅 Well done Rhiannon great performance well deserved 👏👏👏 JC said: Well done Rhiannon... really pleased for you... great performance 👏
Matchday 11 - 22/05/2021
Warwick Juniors (h) 4 - 3
Alan said: Well that was hard to watch with the scoreline flipping back and forth. In that context not our best performance so far, but hey it's the scores on the board that matter: 4-3. Opening goal from Aleesha who's back at it and GOTM. Strong 2nd half performance from our 2 strikers reflected in 2 goals from Athena and a string of threatening corners from Molly. A goal from Isla was sandwiched between the brace from Athena - and points in the bag. Job done by the league leading Wordsley Panthers. DV said: Well done girls your fight and spirit got you through. Well done Aleesha for GOM 👏👏👏 JD said: Well done girls another win 👏. Well done Aleesha great performance and goal 👌👏 JC said: Well done girls... tough game, but feels great to come out victorious 👍 Congratulations Aleesha, top performance 👏 View from the Lino: Fantastic girls today. Well done Alesha, great performance and Millie; true character after the first game - that’s how to come back. Outstanding.
Matchday 10 - 15/05/2021
Coventry United (a) 2 - 5
Alan said: Carrying the mantle of league leaders is never easy, unless you are the Wordsley Panthers. What a disciplined and complete performance that was to go 5 points clear at the top. From Athena's perfect set and Molly's sumptuous finish the tone was set. To be followed by 3 fantastic team moves, finished off by Isla, Molly and Lottie. Just great performances all over the place, from the solid midfield 3 calling the tune, firm defence shepherded by Sian and Faith and threats all over the place up front and wide. A penalty and fee kick gave them 2 goals, but a confident 5-2 victory rounded off by Troope and a GOTM performance and goal. DV said: Yet again you all kept your discipline and played superb. The league table doesn’t lie . You deserve to be where you are. Superb girls !! Well done Troope for that 2nd half performance GOM 👏👏👏 👏👏😩 JD said: Proud day for our team of Girls 😊 Credit to the girls since the return from last lockdown. Hard times physically and mentally fatigue. Certainly proud as a parent. They have certainly gone through so many gears up which is another level of u15s girls football. We’re more of team with everyone playing their part . Amazing Girls 👏👏👏 Credit to them all 😊⚽️🐝🐾💜 JC said: Well done girls I really enjoyed that, a great team performance with hard work, alongside some lovely football at times... excellent play Troopes well done 👏 Random dad said: There is only ONE Olivia (Troope)...get in, well done ladies!
Matchday 9 - 08/05/2021
Coventry City (h) 1 - 0
Alan Said: The words gutsy, battling, seem to be only ones in my vocabulary at the moment, but they rightly describe today's performance. Against a very physical team our Panthers, to a girl, put it out there today. The defenders were heroic, the midfield tireless in their discipline and tracking back and a real threat up front. Then goalie who didn't have a lot to do, but 2 key saves clinched her GOTM. So a real gutsy 1-0 win and top of the league at halfway stage, after an alert Isla finish. We couldn't be any prouder of them.
Matchday 8 - 01/05/2021
Bartley Reds (a) 0 - 12 Alan said: Athena 5, Molly 4, Lottie and Faith sounds like a quiz result, but it's the goal scorers from a very disciplined and professional performance. With contributions from the whole squad and most pleasingly, what DV called for, a clean sheet, with Ellie not having a save to make. Joint top of league and long may it continue. Just so impressed with the effort, passing, composure all over the field, including GOTM Lottie in that disciplined holding role. Dave said: Well played today girls. Super job . Great to get a Clean sheet Well done Lottie GOM super show 👏👏😩 JD said: 😊⚽️Some great passing and movement today from the girls .Well done Lottie excellent performance 🏆👏
Matchday 7 - 24/04/2021
Kidderminster Harriers (h) 3 - 2 😊⚽️ Alan said: A similar game as against Warwick particularly the start we made, camped in Kiddy Harriers half for the whole first half. But this time we had something to show for it, as somebody finally got on the end of Molly's pinpoint corners, Joella heading in. The girls were dominating the game with their possession and not letting Kiddy into any kind of rhythm. Inevitably a 2nd goal followed as Athena was set clear and calmly rounded our former goalkeeper. The second half started much the same and a third goal followed from Molly. Then the wobbles set in, maybe tiredness, a touch of complacency, and the Harriers scored one and were launching balls and long throw ins. A second Kidderminster followed and things got a little tense, but the girls hung in there and this time the 3-2 score was in our favour. Good performances all over the field and worthy girls of the match in Isla and Ellie. Dave said: Passion and heart saw you through . Fully deserved result . Would have been criminal if they had took something out of that game . You proved a point today . Well done girls and well done Isla and Ellie for GOM . Panthers March on !!! 👏👏😩 JD said: Super girls 👏👏😂 another great show of strength and character on a football pitch 👊. JC said: Agreed... excellent game girls... I loved how you all played for each other and covered each other’s backs, great team performance, especially when we had to dig in! Well done Isla & Ellie great game.... 👏
Matchday 6 - 17/04/2021
Warwick Juniors (a) 3 - 2 I think Warwick will probably agree that they were a little lucky to come away with all 3 points from this one today - and Panthers were a bit unlucky not to get anything out of the game. We moved the ball well, were rapid down the flanks and created lots of good chances, particularly in the first 20 minutes, only to get hit with a sucker punch against the run of play (great finish though by Warwick's no 8). A second nicely worked goal followed, but did flatter Warwick a little, before a wonderful save from E1, tipping over the bar, meant we went into the break 2-0 at half time. Lots of graft after the re-start resulted in a break for M9 to score a crucial goal to get us back into the game, before a cruel OG off a corner made it 3 -1 just moments later (M - who was awesome throughout today by the way - these things happen, stay strong!) Lots more pressure from us followed - their GK and defence kept them in contention with some important stops - but we did get another one back late in the second period following a great through ball by M9 which was slotted away by A5 - unfortunately it turned out to be too little too late, but some really great performances all over the pitch from our girls who should be very proud of themselves...onwards and upwards ladies! Alan said: Against the team that topped our league until lockdown, the girls acquitted themselves well in a narrow loss. The fact that Warwick barely got in our half in the first 20 minutes tells it's own story. All that was needed to reflect that pressure was a goal. Unfortunately despite some good chances, and good saves by a top goalkeeper, it didn't come. Instead it was Warwick who took the lead, the speed of one of their top two players proving crucial. This knocked a little of the stuffing out of the girls and Warwick grew in confidence, leading to a second goal and a wonder save from EM. Clearly disappointed coaches told the girls at half time that the score was no reflection on them as we had most of the possession and the best of and lots of clear cut chances. The second half saw what we see in the girls all the time, a resilience and determination. No better reflected in our goal, after a crunching slide tackle in our half Jo moved forward and had the composure to pick out a long pass to M9 who finished expertly in the corner. The game had turned and the Panthers were dominant again. Against the run of play Warwick got a corner and increased their lead to 3-1via an unavoidable own goal. Still time though for the girls to show gutsy they are, a perfect ball from M9 for A5 to finish. A 3-2 loss then, but best team they've played according to the opposition and a team that was still going at them after 80 minutes.
Matchday 5 - 10/04/2021
Coventry United (h) 3 - 2 Hooray!!! - finally back at it again today after another lengthy lay off for that horrible virus thing.....very entertaining game against CUFC; could have been home and hosed at half time but Cov were the better team second half if we are honest and we were lucky to come away with the win in the end. Great performance again from E1 between the sticks; J8s throws might cause a few problems for the opposition this year! Dave said: Well done girls you make me so proud and well done S for GOM 👏👏👏👏👏 JD said: Great result some excellent performances all round we kept fighting until the end again well done girls 👏. S Gotm solid performance- great goal 🥅 ⚽️👏. View from the Lino: S - what a rock at the back and E1 in goal the one save on the line in the second half I don’t know how she did it; this linesman business is a bit risky though 😂😂😂
COVID LOCKDOWN
Matchday 5 - 11/10/2020
Derby County (a) 2 - 2 Another very competitive game today against a very tough and physical Derby side. I thought we contained Derby really well in the first half and gave them no real opportunity to settle on the ball. Our girls' work rate was phenomenal, pressing and breaking up play throughout the first 45 - and we were eventually rewarded with a slickly worked goal by M9, followed by another from the spot shortly afterwards, converted by M9 after A5 was up--ended in the box. We could have had at least one more before the break, with A hitting the crossbar from another smartly worked centre. It was always going to be difficult to keep such intense momentum going second half and Derby came at us all guns blazing, playing some nice football and creating some excellent chances. Whilst we continued to create the odd chance on the break, traffic seemed to have reversed and it was clear our girls were starting to tire from their first half exploits. Eventually Derby got one back and with around 10 minutes to go found a well deserved leveler. However, despite a couple of late controversial refereeing decisions (one for each side - I won't elaborate here), our girls managed to keep their resolve and hang on for a hard earned point. Lots of excellent performances all over the pitch, but a big shout out to our goalie who was magnificent today. Assured between the sticks throughout, but pulling off some quite incredible saves in the second half to keep us in the game at 2-2. A draw just about fair on balance and another excellent game of football to watch - look forward to seeing Derby again at our place! 👍🐾
Dave said: So proud of the team today. Everyone of them did what we asked of them . Magnificent effort. Just shows we can match anyone in this league. BRILLIANT !!!! JD said: Outstanding today all round team performance on the pitch felt like a win to me 😊⚽️Go Girls Excellent saves E well done 👏 🏆 Alan said: Brilliant today girls, great character and discipline and fantastic display by our one and only no.1. The Franco report: GOTM today was E for an outstanding first half display (clean sheet) and in the second half for making two unbelievable saves. Well done E. 👍 The first half was dominated by Wordsley Panthers from start to finish by dealing with everything at the back by our solid defence, an outstanding goal keeper who was on-form, winning the midfield battle by scrapping for every tackle and using the wings to great effect to score a super goal. We continued to take the game by the scruff of the neck - we out passed and outplayed Derby and eventually won a penalty which was slotted in calmly to make the score 2-0. Derby County were clearly rattled as we created chance after chance - it was only the cross bar which saved Derby from going in three nil down at half time. Half time: Wordsley Panthers 2 Derby County 0. The second half saw a fight back by Derby as they were chasing the game. Our girls put so much effort into the first half that naturally they were always going to find it hard to maintain that same level of intensity as they had shown in the first half. Derby deservedly scored two goals and it looked like they might have even grabbed the winner towards the end of the match. The linesman saw a player offside and the referee agreed with him and refused to overrule his decision by ignoring the aggressive protests shown by the Derby coaches and Derby parents which meant that the goal was disallowed and the spoils were shared. Full time: 2-2
Matchday 4 - 03/10/2020
Port Vale (h) 2 - 4 Let's be honest - not much between these 2 teams today (as standings in the league at 10.30 am would have suggested!) Thought we deserved a bit more out of the game and the scoreline flattered them a little; created lots of opportunities and could have been comfortably in the lead at half time if we had luck on our side and and some decisions had gone our way. S scored an amazing long range free kick early in the second half to put us one up, but that seemed to galvanize Port Vale who came back really strongly and in a crazy 10 minutes scored 4 (four) times (nice play and finishing from the Vale to be fair, could have been 5 but for a world class save from our goalie); but fair play also to our girls who didn't lose heart and grew again - we were in the ascendancy in the last 15 minutes and were camped in their box for long periods, menacing their goal and forcing some great great defensive clearances and saves from their goalkeeper. Finally found a goal with another decent long range strike from A5, but unfortunately it was too little to late. Not our day today - but thanks to all 30 girls for entertaining us in what were really wet and miserable conditions. Really good game 👍🐾
Dave said: Unlucky today girls . Thought we battled well but just didn’t have the rub of the green . Could have been a different score line if things had gone for us. Well done E for GOTM This result will make us stronger !! JD said: Think the girls did great up against Academy players ,thought we should have been 2-0 then few great counter attacks found us out but credit the girls didn’t give up even at the end on another day who knows but good team effort. E awesome game today all round strong tackles breaking up the play well 👏👏👏. Alan said: Yeah well done girls hung in there tough after game turned on its head. Really physical and full throttle out there. Tremendous stuff E but all gave it a right go against a physically strong team.👍 The Franco report: GOTM today was E who worked hard, put in some great tackles, communicated with her team mates really well and passed the ball brilliantly. Well done E. 👍 The first half was a great contest between two teams that fought and battled for every ball. We could have and probably should have been 2-0 up by half-time but it wasn’t to be today as we just couldn’t get those breaks that you need sometimes in football to win a match. Half time: Wordsley Panthers 0 Port Vale 0. The first ten to fifteen minutes of the second half we continued to work and battle just like we did in the first half and seemed to be in control of the match. Our passing was good and we created really good chances. Eventually, we scored a cracking free kick and deservedly got the all important goal to go 1-0 up. For the next ten to fifteen minutes, some people said that we seemed to switch off when we went 1-0 up. I think we have to give Port Vale some credit too; they made some changes to their team and their girls reacted to going 1-0 down. The last fifteen to twenty minutes saw some changes of our own where we lifted our heads, grabbed a good goal and dominated the last quarter of the match: unfortunately the deficit was too big to claw back this week but overall the effort was tremendous from our girls once again. Full time: Wordsley Panthers 2 Port Vale 4
Matchday 3 - 26/09/2020
Kinghurst Pavilions Sports Club (a) 1 - 6 Today saw our girls take on Kinghurst Pavilions away, for our 3rd game of the season. The first half took a while to get going due to the conditions. Kingshurst made us play against the wind but once our girls settled into the game it was only a matter of time before we scored. We dominated against a well organised and disciplined side, however, the opposition never really troubled us in the first half as our forwards took their chances really well, our central midfielders battled for every ball and created some great openings for the forwards and our wingers really stood out today with their crossing. Our defence (including the goalkeepers) looked assured and solid as they all dealt with every threat with the minimum of fuss. Halftime 3-0 to Wordsley Panthers. The second half (for most of it anyway) went pretty much the same way as the first half. This time, we had to adapt to playing with the wind, we tried to play really good football when we could and we scored a further three top quality goals. In a short space of time these girls have gelled instantly and are unbeaten so far. We couldn't of wished for better start to the season. GOTM - Molly ran the attacking line very well, with two great 1st half goals, cool finishing one v one. An excellent all round work rate all game. Well deserved GOTM Molly 👏🏽👏🏽 Kinghurst Pavilions 1 Wordsley Panthers 6 🖤💜🤍🐾🐝⚽️🐝🐾🤍💜🖤
Dave said: Proud of every one of you girls. The great thing is I know there’s still more to come . You really are a talented bunch! JD said: Well done girls another great result ,great finishes in front of goal wow 🤩 league looks great after 3 games in 😊🖤🤍💜⚽️ Alan said: Girls tricky conditions, small pitch, job well done. Top of league after 3 games beyond beyond our wildest dreams. And best of all it's a joy to be about such a great group of girls.👉👉👉⚽
Matchday 2 - 19/09/2020
Kidderminster Harriers (h) 2 - 2 2nd game of the season saw our U15 girls play against Kidderminster Harriers. A good physical game with both teams looking likely to score, we went into HT 2-2. Some super saves made by our keeper in the 2nd half, well done 🙌🏽⚽️ Unlucky not to get the winner in the last few minutes, when we had a one one, but a draw was probably a fair result. Overall, a good performance and well battled by the girls, well done all. GOTM - Lottie for an excellent 2nd half performance, excellent feet with the ball, magic skills and strong tackling in the middle of the park. Well done 👏🏽👏🏽 Wordsley Panthers 2 Kidderminster Harriers 2 🖤💜🤍🐾🐝⚽️🐝🐾🤍💜🖤 Dave said: Fantastic result girls JD said: Another great performance today everyone battled as a team , unlucky not to get the 3rd goal think we tried to play the better football all round .😊⚽️🖤💜👏 Alan said: Good job girls, tricky conditions and physical game. Hung in there tough and some good chances to win. Franco said : Well done to all of the girls for showing bottle again today, especially after going down to an early goal. Well done to Lottie as well for being MOTM today. ⚽️👍
Matchday 1 - 12/09/2020
Coventry City (a) 2 - 4
So...2 weeks ago, due to circumstances beyond any of our control, I don't think either Sedgley Panthers or Wordsley Wasps were confident that they would be able to field a full side for the first game of the season. Very sad for all involved : ( Then, a bit of lateral thinking (not sure who to credit for this?) and 13 days ago we all met up as a group in a peaceful park at the bottom of Wrens Nest for our first kick about... One more training session and two friendlies now under our belt (both won convincingly incidentally) it is still very early days for these girls, but I am absolutely astonished by the way they have adapted and united as a team - thrown together in adversity, it is lovely to see new bonds forming between players on the pitch and friendships forming off it. Some great talent on display amongst this crowd and you can see how much they are all enjoying themselves and the new challenge in what is probably the best local youth league for amateur girls. Credit to the coaching staff who have also had to adapt, but I think we have all hit it off and will enjoy the coming season no matter what the outcome is...as long as we can analyze the game over a Dan Miguel in the Rabbit afterwards. It will be a hard campaign and no doubt there will be a few hiccups on the way, but - I am certain these girls will do us all proud!!! UTP!! Any road up...on to the game; Started really brightly and bagged a couple of early goals (one a great long range cracker from L12 followed by a cool finish by A5); could have been out of sight after twenty minutes if the ball had run our way, but the drinks break seemed to interrupt our momentum and Coventry came back at us very strongly. 2-1 at half time and then a leveler shortly after the restart, City seemed to be in the ascendancy but our girls kept going and were awarded a penalty after a spell of possession and pressing play. Converted by M9, who then went on to bag another to seal the victory....come on! M11 deservedly POTM for an excellent hard working performance.
Dave said: Fantastic result girls JD said: Tremendous first game girls Alan said: 2 weeks together, first league game , little blip, then a gutsy victory Franco said : Well done girls, you weathered the storm and showed great character to come out of it with three points.
